RIP Jon Swift

Al Weisel, known as the blogger Jon Swift has died.

He once linked to a post of mine and in his faux conservative opinion, made fun of an argument or two I made. Being that I never heard of his blog, after a quick read I didn't immediately catch on to his satire, but did catch the criticism. After I foolishly commented on that post, I quickly realized the satire. It was good. His whole blog was good. And in my case at least, his criticism of me was the most pleasant and entertaining criticism a blogger could ask for. We bantered back and forth for a while after that, and I must say, for a liberal who picks fights in the blogosphere, he was very, very polite.

I think his claim to internet fame was a bunch of hilarious Amazon reviews (which unfortunately have been removed). After that initial and interesting interaction, I remember he baited me a few times later by linking to me in a few critical posts, and I sincerely regret being too busy to respond. You will be missed Jon Swift.

I suppose this is befitting for a final post here at this blog. He sure may not have been the greatest president, but I think we can all agree his presidency stands out among them all. From the beginning he's had it rough. And it only got worse. Few things are certain: he led us through it all and kept us safe.

Both literally and figuratively. I can't seem to shake this cold. It seems that for every year I age, my colds tend to last another day or two and increase in severity. It's not like I don't take care of myself.

As for the figuratively part, and besides being busy the last, well, couple years, I've been anything but motivated to keep this blog going. I've gone from a couple of hits a day, to thousands a day, and well, now am lucky to get more than a hundred visitors a day. Not complaining, just pointing out that my stats reflect my effort.

I think I'm calling it quits for this blog. Not cold turkey, but this blog is pretty much done. I've got another idea in the works, and maybe will return full-time next year under a new blog with a new name. New everything. Maybe.

And it's not very often I agree with liberals like Greenwald, but he has a point. And in a way I'm glad (though he's not). Obama looks to be centering himself. Including the Democrats in Congress. I mean, imagine if the next presidency was going to act how the congressional Democrats did for the last 8 years? They were insane with flaming rage only to be fanned by their base. God forbid.

And that doesn't give the rightosphere much opportunity. I'm sure there will be, but for right now, the blogosphere is pretty quiet, and consequently boring. I've never been one to care much about local or regional politics, obscurities, or any other niche outside issues of national significance, so I won't be doing this again, for a while at least.

The incoming Obama administration is prepared to abandon President Bush's doctrine of isolating Hamas by establishing a channel to the Islamist organisation, sources close to the transition team say.

The move to open contacts with Hamas - which could be initiated through the US intelligence services - would represent a definitive break with the Bush presidency's ostracising of the group.

The Guardian has spoken to three people with knowledge of the discussions in the Obama camp.

There is no talk of Obama approving direct diplomatic negotiations with Hamas early on in his administration, but he is being urged by advisers to initiate low-level or clandestine approaches, and there is growing recognition in Washington that the policy of ostracising Hamas is counter-productive.

Unless the Guardian is misinformed, this will be at the very least, interesting to see. I don't what opening up talks with someone who wants nothing less than the extermination of a key ally will get us. Probably a just pissed-off ally, and that's if we're lucky.

The shocking thing here, unfortunately, is that Iran even had a paper like this.

The Iranian press watchdog shut down leading reformist newspaper Kargozaran on Wednesday over publication of a piece criticising Palestinian militants, the official IRNA news agency reported.

"Kargozaran has been banned over a media offence and the case has been referred to the court," Mohammad Parvizi, who is in charge of domestic media at the culture ministry, told IRNA.

He said the ban was ordered over "a piece yesterday which justifies the Zionist regime's crimes against humanity in Gaza and portrays the Palestinian resistance as terrorists who cause the deaths of children and civilians by taking up position in kindergartens and hospitals."

Admittedly, I enjoy the Democrats engaging in circus acts to cover their ass, often to the point of doing more damage to themselves than had the metaphoric shit hit the fan anyway.

But I agree with Reid; any appointment by Blagojevich would be and should be opposed. I don't think race has anything to do with it, rather the little institutional integrity the Senate has left ought to be protected regardless of its racial make-up. It shouldn't be another victim of Chicago politics.

THE Home Office has quietly adopted a new plan to allow police across Britain routinely to hack into people’s personal computers without a warrant.

The move, which follows a decision by the European Union’s council of ministers in Brussels, has angered civil liberties groups and opposition MPs. They described it as a sinister extension of the surveillance state which drives “a coach and horses” through privacy laws.

The hacking is known as “remote searching”. It allows police or MI5 officers who may be hundreds of miles away to examine covertly the hard drive of someone’s PC at his home, office or hotel room.

Material gathered in this way includes the content of all e-mails, web-browsing habits and instant messaging.

Although for many, they may not be so new:

The simple fact is that people can be fellow travellers on a path that leads to liberty without all marching in ideological lock-step. It just boils down to asking the question "do you want the state to have less control over people's lives or more control?" If a person can honestly answer that they think the state is too powerful and needs to be reduced, that is a fellow traveller.

This is the time to apply that test to Republican politicians, every last one of them... and drive any who fail that simple test out of the party by whatever means necessary. Now is the time for a figurative internal 'Night of the Long Knives'. This is the opportunity to destroy a great many political careers and remake the Republican Party into the party of constitutionally limited government and to start fighting the culture war that the party should have been fighting since the day Ronald Reagan left office with his job only half done.

Big tent, core principles. It's as if such an idea is foreign to the Republican Party, given their behavior the past several years.

Until June, the question was: Is the right guaranteed to individuals and unconnected with military service, or guaranteed only to states as they exercise their right to maintain militias? The court held, 5-4, for the former view.

An obviously mentally impaired columnist then goes on to assert that without this ambiguity, state legislatures are now burdened with having to conform to some weird kind of 2nd Amendment that only has one true meaning, not the old tried and true what-the-hell-ever-we-want-it-to-mean, meaning.

I'm not saying that's a good thing. But I think there are good things that come with an Obama presidency. For one, when you hear people shout things like Amerikkka!, they are now demonstrably full of shit.

I didn't sleep well last night, and I woke up this morning, went to the New York Times and fully expecting to see something that would make me ill, I saw in big bold blue letters O-B-A-M-A. I thought I would cringe. But I smiled. America did pick an underdog, a horrible underdog, but still. As if that was not enough, now the Times is pimping a blue map of the U.S.; almost every state voted more for Democrats than four years ago. Good for them. Doesn't bother me. John McCain was no inspiring conservative. Say what you want about who's to blame, but our voters stayed home last night. By contrast, Obama was inspiring to many, and his turnout reflects that. Now that I mention it, McCain was like Kerry, in terms of his inability to inspire.

Obama won on all fronts. That is inspiring even to a libertarianish conservative like me. With any luck, we can put up a worthy and formidable opponent in another four years. We need to start working on the groundwork for such a monumental task today.

Final update for this post: Iowa called for Obama. Looks like a big victory for Obama. I'm swallowing my anger, and there's plenty of it justifiably so, but if these projections are accurate, I congratulate Obama. But the truth squads, the bitter-clingy remarks, and the hubris better be nowhere insight after tonight. Or it's going to be a brutal four years.

Update 4: New Mexico called for Obama, Florida still not looking good for McCain so it's getting harder and harder for a McCain miracle.

UPDATE 3: ABC, NBC, and yes, FOX calls Ohio for Obama. If PA and OH are Obama's it's over for McCain. There is no realistic way to win, not even if McCain wins Florida, Iowa, Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico. Then again, it's not over until it's over.

Update 2: Ohio and Florida are still not looking good for McCain. Frankly, even if McCain wins those two, good chance it will still hinge on Colorado. Iowa looks to go to Obama, but also an important state as things are now. I'm still keeping an eye on Pennsylvania as not many precincts have reported yet.. If PA changes to red, it's a whole new ballgame. But it's not looking good either.

Update: Obama gets all New England, and most networks have called PA for him as well, despite a complete lack of precinct reports. If that's true, McCain cannot afford to lose Florida AND Ohio, otherwise Obama safely wins with all his other solidly blue states. And Ohio is not looking good.

Spot on, I'd say.

Really, though, I can't predict this one for nothing. I have been avoiding polls this whole season for two reasons: a) Most are probably flawed and hence wrong, and b) Despite that I still can't stomach the results.

One thing I do know, is that I regret not getting involved as much as I should/could have. It took me a while to get over (and to some extent I still haven't gotten over) my objections to McCain. One question I always mull over is compromise or principle. Can a man compromise his principles and still be considered a principled man? I think theoretically no. But the real world tends to throw theory out the window (often with pleasure it seems).

Not again will I waste such opportunities for some trivial dilemma. I will fight with and for allies despite disagreements without giving up the fight for my principles. Not every battle is zero-sum. Call me a hack I frankly don't care, but principles aren't worth shit without results.

Vote McCain. And kick the Democrats out of Congress.

Whoa, AP says we just attacked inside Syria

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) - U.S. military helicopters attacked territory inside Syria close to its border with Iraq Sunday, killing eight people in a strike the Syrian government condemned as "serious aggression."

A U.S. military official said the raid by special forces targeted the foreign fighter network that travels through Syria into Iraq in an area where the Americans have been unable to shut it down because it was out of the military's reach.

"We are taking matters into our own hands," the official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the political sensitivity of cross-border raids.

The attack came just days after the commander of U.S. forces in western Iraq said American troops were redoubling efforts to secure the Syrian border, which he called an "uncontrolled" gateway for fighters entering Iraq.

A Syrian government statement carried by the official Syrian Arab News Agency said the helicopters attacked the Sukkariyeh Farm near the town of Abu Kamal, five miles inside the Syrian border. Four helicopters attacked a civilian building under construction shortly before sundown and fired on workers inside, the statement said.

The area is near the Iraqi border city of Qaim, which had been a major crossing point for fighters, weapons and money coming into Iraq to fuel the Sunni insurgency.

We should do the same thing in Iran. As to why we keep pretending there is no double standard and no Iranian cross-border activity is beyond me. No, it's just insane.

He's obviously supported Obama for some time now. Why else would he feel the need to defend Obama as if he was another talking head on the Obama campaign PR circuit. As for his uneasiness with the Republican party's shift to the right... I think the fact that McCain is the nominee puts the idea to rest. Notta word though, 'bout the Democrats' shift to the left.

A lot of people respect General Powell's words, which is why Obama and Powell are banking on just that, hoping this gives Obama a much needed cushion.

That is to say, Obama didn't lose badly enough. McCain performed well, put Obama on the defensive, had a few good one liners, some gotchas, all that went over rather well for McCain. On substance and yes, style I think McCain won. Obama was good, but he was tortured when he had to explain his nuance for policies McCain said were not good for America.

That's where Barry suffered a lot. Every time he felt the necessity to explain why his policies were good, he went into detail, which normally would be a good thing, but it came off like a complicated story from a kid who explained his way out of trouble, a complicated story full of nuance for all 13 instances of trouble. It's like they say; when you're on defense, you're not scoring.

One place where McCain had trouble was with potential Roe-supporting judicial nominees. But it wasn't much. It's not like the country hasn't elected a president who was against abortion before.

I think he fumbled a little on Ayers and ACORN. At first he pinned them on Obama pretty good, but he turned it into something like a double 180, not a 360, but 180 degrees one way, and then back. It went like this:

Obama has some serious explaining to do about his connection to Bill Ayers, even though I don't care about him. And he has explaining to do about ACORN. These are important issues the American people should know about, but we shouldn't dwell on them. Obama is a good guy, but these are horrible connections. My campaign is not about this stuff, it's about bigger issues, like taxes...

Ace is steamed that McCain didn't bring up Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac or the subprime mess, and I think he should have, although it seemed like the debate was not long enough. Yeah, they could have done without the "MY SUPPORTERS ARE BETTER BEHAVED THAN YOUR SUPPORTERS" garbage at the beginning, although that is a major national issue, at least according to the press.

McCain won, and I think it should help him, but it was no launch to the White House. Like I said earlier, Obama was too busy not scoring playing defense. But he didn't give much ground, ground McCain needed.

Even if it were true, and the media, succumbing to their urge to redeem themselves and wash away their increasingly guilty consciences for unapologetic Obama cheerleading and decided to cover it, it wouldn't be enough. If Ayers, Wright, Rezko, and Acorn are not enough, then one bad Michelle moment would be a mere drop in the ocean.

Pre-debate thoughts

You know, I think I would rather have Al Gore, Hillary Clinton, or John Kerry as president than Barack Obama. In that order. Maybe that explains my recent fervor to support McCain. It's not so much about McCain, but just this urge to fight back the tide of political retards. Sometimes called Obamabots, they're either ignored, or praised by the media, whichever benefits Obama at the time.

All of this factors into tonight's debate. McCain is trailing in the polls, nationally, and in vitally important swing states. Other than energizing much of the base, I don't see the Palin pick paying off, electoral votes from Alaska notwithstanding (yes that was sarcasm). McCain needs a big win tonight, but more than that he needs Obama to lose big.

We can learn a lot from our opponents by their behavior, and recently Obama has been employing surrogates and otherwise reputable allies saying he is a good, trustworthy guy. Whether this is a reaction to McCain's "smears" questioning Obama's links with domestic terrorist Bill Ayers, or filling the holes in the public's perception of Obama, doesn't matter. He revealed his weakness. Obama is not to be trusted, he wont make you feel warm and fuzzy inside, he will take your guns. Your traditional way of life is alien to Obama. His life, his record, his mentors, his associations, and his ideology all show this. Now that he's running for president, he's somehow not who he most certainly was? That's what McCain needs to do tonight. Show that. That isn't Palin's job, she can barely communicate (I love Palin by the way, I just have a hard time listening to her speak), it's the War Veteran's turn to stick it to an arrogant elitist liberal.

Virginia Senator Jim Webb does an ad for Obama pretty much saying he trusts the junior Illinois senator on the 2nd Amendment. It goes something like this:

Hi I'm Senator Jim Webb, you can trust me, just like my dad trusted me with the trustworthy rifle he gave me when I was a kid. I'm in the NRA[!] so you know you can trust me when I say you can trust my trustworthy friend Barack Obama with your guns. But don't trust the NRA. Did I mention that I trust Barack Obama?

Meanwhile, the AP diligently maintains its line on the Obama front, saying there really is no difference between Obama and McCain on guns, except that Palin is a scary gun nut who kills puppies from the air. Oh, and that the NRA is a partisan hack of an organization... this coming from none other than the front group American Hunters and Shooters Association, which the AP doesn't even pretend to question. You can't make this stuff up.

Why was it taken away in the first place? Because she showed bad judgment, by having the audacity to you know, actually carry it.

She had lost the permit after other parents complained last month that she was carrying her loaded handgun in a holster at her daughter's soccer game.

Judge Robert Eby says even though the law required him to give her the permit back, he questioned whether Hain showed good judgment by ignoring other parents' safety concerns.

The nerve of some people. Yes, I mean the judge. I wonder what he thinks of the holstered guns of his bailiffs?

Yes, I know it looks bad. It looks bad for McCain, which makes other things look worse. But last I checked McCain was still running, and still has another debate with 'The One.' This is hardly over. One thing that repeatedly comes to mind this election, is that Americans have a tendency to support underdogs, and quickly develop contempt for the arrogant (post-partisan humility anyone?). Barring some giant McCain screw-up, I expect Obama's numbers to fall, quite a bit.

I don't like McCain any more than the next conservative, but I like him a lot more than an idolized far-left politician disposed to near dictatorial power (add a world war and presto, Heil Obama -- because let's face it, conservatives wouldn't treat a sitting president the way Bush was treated). Let's leave the doomsaying to the Left. You know what, since they stopped being so pessimistic and started embracing the HopeChange mantra, they've done rather well.

There's room for painting the Left for who they are, but can we hold off a bit on writing our own obituary?

Most troubling, however, is how allowing racism to creep into the discussion serves McCain's purpose so well.

Not because he is a terrorist, while for the AP that is not so bad per se, it's because of the racial stereotype the AP decided is associated with terrorists. They're so far in the tank, I'm surprised not to find the HopeChange logo plastered all over the AP's website. You know, because it's practically racist not to openly support Obama.

Disappearing blogger

At least my blog is still here. To the one or two people who still check this please accept my apologies, but quite frankly blogging is (and perhaps should be) one of my lowest priorities.

I'm still a news and political junkie, and could've been blogging my fingers off if I had a bit more free time, but the shift in focus has benefited me, a lot. Beginning in a few weeks I'll have more free time, and may continue to blog again regularly. We'll see.

Until then, here's a quote that just hit the nail on its fuckin head:

Just read Scalia's majority opinion. Overall, I like it. It was narrowly tailored, with extensive substance on just what the Second Amendment means, which makes me very, very hopeful.

I think you'll agree with me after reading what Breyer had to say in dissent:

Far more important are the unfortunate consequences that today’s decision is likely to spawn. Not least of these, as I have said, is the fact that the decision threatens to throw into doubt the constitutionality of gun laws throughout the United States.

The only logical explanation must be that once Zimbabwe hits bottom, there's no way but up baby. One might suggest that Mugabe is in fact, evil, and an idiot, but third-world leaders are never evil, and only when they buddy up with the United States are they idiots.

A Utah woman calls 911 because she can't unlock her car doors... from the inside.

A woman called Orem police Friday afternoon needing help because her battery died and she was locked inside her car...

Once officers were able to talk to the woman on the phone, they were able to tell her how to manually operate the slide lock mechanism on the inside door panel to open the door and free herself.

Which begs the question, if she can't figure out how to manually unlock a door, should she even be driving?

Not like your typical celebrity who often says one thing and does another, Angelina Jolie is just plain badass:

She has bought real versions of the weapons she used in the hit movie.

Angelina, who has four children and is currently pregnant with twins, carried a 9mm Heckler and Koch handgun in Tomb Raider.

To Gun or not to Gun?

Megan McArdle asks what many people in D.C. will (likely) be asking themselves in the near future:

So if Heller, as libertarians devoutly hope, legalizes gun ownership in DC, the question immediately arises for those of us who live here: buy one, or not? On the one hand, they are expensive, and shooting ranges far away. On the other hand, I live alone in an apartment that is something less than amply fortified.

Here's my answer for what it's worth. Yes.

I'm no firearms expert, but I do carry and keep guns in my home for, among other reasons, protection. I'm an occasional hunter, but more often I'm at the range. Ammo is relatively inexpensive and once you do get to a range, it's a lot of fun. I've never needed it for protection, but I'm pretty sure I'll be happy to have one handy in case I do. Last I checked, the crime rate for my city was the highest in the state, and it seems every time the subject arises in conversation, I find that I am talking to another victim. My neighbors were burglarized last year, and I'm in a pretty nice neighborhood. But that's just me.

For those in D.C. you have it worse than me.

Clinton shamelessly panders to Montana gun owners

I guess it's good news, per Uncle's thinking. It's probably one of her only options left in Montana -- outflank Obama on the one issue he has little to no wiggle room.

When it comes to gun rights, the senator says she did not support gun licensing in New York, and does not support the registration of handguns nationally. But she adds that she does support Second Amendment rights.

"I don't think there's any contradiction between defending Second Amendment rights and the rights of lawful gun owners and trying to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and gang members and people who unfortunately have mental challenges."

Funny, she forgot to mention her AWB renewal idea. Then again, "assault rifles" are probably only owned by such people.

Obama said he was "deeply disappointed" by Pfleger's comments.

"As I have traveled this country, I've been impressed not by what divides us, but by all that that unites us," he said in a statement. "That is why I am deeply disappointed in Father Pfleger's divisive, backward-looking rhetoric, which doesn't reflect the country I see or the desire of people across America to come together in common cause."

I guess it's a good thing for Obama that most of America isn't judging him by the friends he keeps.

Pfleger went on to tell the crowd that legislators that vote against gun control legislation should be "snuffed" as well. As many know, "snuff" is slang for especially violent murder.

Texas Supreme Court returns FLDS kids

The Texas Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that children who were separated from their parents following a raid on a polygamist ranch should be returned.

The ruling effectively ends one of the largest child custody cases in U.S. history.

I've commented on this before, and it's good to see the state's overly aggressive CPS agency be put to shame.

[I]n its ruling on Thursday, the Texas Supreme Court said that child welfare officials overstepped their authority by pulling the children from their homes and that the kids should be returned.

"There has been a catastrophic, emotional and physical trauma to these families," said FLDS member Will Jessop. "Permanent damage that will be left on them for a lifetime."

"Two wrongs do not make a right," Jessop added. "This is truly a nightmare that we have waken up to, and hopefully have it end."

The justices based their ruling on an appellate court's finding last week that no evidence has yet been presented showing that the children really were being abused -- physically or sexually.

The greatest threat to classic Republicanism is not liberalism; it's this new brand of libertarianism, which is social liberalism and economic conservatism, but it's a heartless, callous, soulless type of economic conservatism because it says "look, we want to cut taxes and eliminate government. If it means that elderly people don't get their Medicare drugs, so be it. If it means little kids go without education and healthcare, so be it."

I thought small government was the core of Republican, nay, classic Republican principles. I guess as long as Uncle Sam doesn't lay a finger on our wallets, he's more than welcome to tell us what we can and can't do in our own bedrooms.

Oh, and last I checked, free markets made the poorest in this country vastly richer than the poor in most centralized market economies.

PSH, eh? Gun Ranges and Target Shooting "result in people being shot and killed"

Mayor David Miller wants to close recreational shooting ranges in Toronto, along with giving the city power to block gun manufacturers and wholesalers from opening new plants or warehouses.
"Nobody can deny that hobby directly results in people being shot and killed on the streets of our city," Miller said of sport shooting yesterday, amid debate on a possible gun bylaw.
Canadian Olympic pistol shooter and downtown resident Avianna Chao begs to differ. She says that if Miller gets his way, it could mean an end to her sport – and it won't make the streets one bit safer.
Miller wants to terminate leases with two gun clubs that have shooting ranges on city property, one at Union Station, the other at Don Montgomery community centre.
Chao, who will head to Beijing this summer to compete for Canada at the Olympics, began shooting at Don Montgomery and now trains primarily at the Union range.

It seems Canada's strict gun control laws are failing, so naturally they want to try more of the same thing, only harder:

They asked for a three-point plan to limit gun violence by:
Making sure federal firearms marking regulations are stringently followed so guns can be traced.
Appointing federal prosecutors to Ontario's guns and gangs task force.
Closing legal loopholes that let gun parts be brought into Canada.
At the same time, city staff released a report calling for a bylaw that would allow the city to restrict or prohibit the making and wholesaling of firearms in Toronto.
Only police and the military should be allowed to operate firing ranges, the report says, calling for an end to the gun club leases.
Recommendations would apply to all firearms, including rifles and shotguns. But in a scrum with reporters, Miller directed most of his comments toward handguns.

Of course, questions arise, like why target the law-abiding for a criminal problem?

"It doesn't make any sense to be zeroing in on a gun club," he said. "We're an Olympic sport ... I'm not sure how shutting us down would help to cut the gun crime."

Sorry pal, it's only about appearing like they're doing their job. They're failing at reducing crime, so they compensate by looking like they're working harder, lest they be thrown out of office. It's more about justifying their paychecks in the face of consistent and utter failure.

It's about feeling safe, as Kaveman said, which "is like being safe, only different."

Children as young as 6 have been forced to have sex with aid workers and peacekeepers in return for food and money, Save the Children UK said in a report released Tuesday.

After interviewing hundreds of children, the charity said it found instances of rape, child prostitution, pornography, indecent sexual assault and trafficking of children for sex.

"It is hard to imagine a more grotesque abuse of authority or flagrant violation of children's rights," said Jasmine Whitbread, chief executive of Save the Children UK.

In the report, "No One To Turn To" a 15-year-old girl from Haiti told researchers: "My friends and I were walking by the National Palace one evening when we encountered a couple of humanitarian men. The men called us over and showed us their penises.

"They offered us 100 Haitian gourdes ($2.80) and some chocolate if we would suck them. I said, 'No,' but some of the girls did it and got the money."

Save the Children says that almost as shocking as the abuse itself is the "chronic under-reporting" of the abuses. It believes that thousands more children around the world could be suffering in silence.

If you read the whole thing you'll find mention of an investigation that started last year, where a handful were jailed, and a few others faced the gallows, er, I mean they were dismissed or repatriated. Talk about effective deterrence.

Woman found guilty of leaving baby in garbage, gets probation

There are a lot of unanswered questions, which, on their face point to nothing less than criminal negligence, if not out-right murder.

The woman who brought her child to term, gave birth and placed it in a garbage dumpster where it was found dead. Allahpundit asks the obvious but important questions linked above; If she didn't want the baby, why not abort it? And if it was stillborn, why dispose of it that way?

Under a plea agreement, she will be sentenced June 27 to time already served - about 30 days of jail time and about 695 days of electronic monitoring. She also will be placed on five years' probation, said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

Judge Kathleen Kennedy warned Ashcraft she could face up to 10 years in prison if she violates probation.

It was "a fair ending to a tragic situation," said her attorney, Mark Geragos.

A fair ending? Fair perhaps if she was extremely mentally handicap and couldn't tell right from wrong. I don't know what kind of educational standards they have at USC, but I don't think a person could make it to their third year without having the capacity to at least seek help for a newborn or stillborn, which would be the only situation making this sentence even close to being fair.

If this shakeup turns out to be true, and better yet, yields positive results well, it means this is another example of the way bureaucracies work in democracies -- which is to say that although they are slow and resistant to change, change and accountability are inevitable.

It's too early to tell how much positive change will become of this, but such examples are merely few of the many characteristics that set even the most heinous of American bureaucracies apart from our real enemies, despite what many on the fringe tend to think.

I don't have the words:

A teenager is facing prosecution for using the word "cult" to describe the Church of Scientology.

The unnamed 15-year-old was served the summons by City of London police when he took part in a peaceful demonstration opposite the London headquarters of the controversial religion.

Officers confiscated a placard with the word "cult" on it from the youth, who is under 18, and a case file has been sent to the Crown Prosecution Service.

A date has not yet been set for him to appear in court.

The decision to issue the summons has angered human rights activists and support groups for the victims of cults.

The incident happened during a protest against the Church of Scientology on May 10. Demonstrators from the anti-Scientology group, Anonymous, who were outside the church's £23m headquarters near St Paul's cathedral, were banned by police from describing Scientology as a cult by police because it was "abusive and insulting."

An Indiana man is capitalizing on high crude oil prices with his own oil well - in his back yard.

Greg Losh tells WISH-T-V in Indianapolis the well that produces three barrels of oil a day is "a money-maker."

Though it's probably just a matter of time before this behavior is artificially disincentivized.

McCain's new scandal

Most of the "scandals" involving McCain heretofore have been weak, almost as weak as oh, Steven Segal's acting. But this one may just pick up some traction in the mainstream media:

McCain, who has made fighting special-interest projects a centerpiece of his presidential campaign, inserted $14.3 million in a 2003 defense bill to buy land around Luke Air Force Base in a provision sought by SunCor Development, the largest of about 50 landowners near the base. SunCor representatives, upset with a state law that restricted development around Luke, met with McCain's staff to lobby for funding, according to John Ogden, SunCor's president at the time.

The Air Force later paid SunCor $3 million for 122 acres near the base. It was the highest single land transaction of the private lots purchased by the government — three times the county's assessed value and twice the military's estimated value. SunCor also donated another 122 acres. Alan Bunnell, a spokesman for SunCor's parent company, Pinnacle West Capital, said the donation was meant to minimize the company's tax bill and enhance the value of adjacent property it owns.

McCain has long-standing ties to SunCor and Pinnacle West:

• McCain's campaigns have received $224,000 since 1998 from donors connected to Pinnacle West, including $104,100 for his current presidential run, according to a USA TODAY analysis of campaign-finance data compiled by the non-partisan CQ MoneyLine.

I don't think this is really a big deal, and if it is, it probably has less to do with McCain and more to do with the suits securing the land deals. But what do I care, I'm don't even like McCain.

Will I hold my nose and pull the lever for him? Once I figure out who the lesser evil is, I'll let you know. Until then, I'm supporting John McClane.

Get this, the Burma military junta just won an election, overwhelmingly:

Myanmar announced Thursday that a constitution won massive support in a referendum — a claim slammed by a leading rights group as an insult to the country's people.

The document, which critics say will cement nearly four decades of military rule, was approved by 92.4 percent of the 22 million eligible voters last Saturday.

In Burma (or Myanmar as the junta prefers), the people place civic duty above other pesky priorities, like finding food, clean water, shelter, and gathering and burying their dead after a devastating cyclone. They also apparently find the junta's handling of the devastation top-notch.

Wow: AP sob-story on Katrina Immigrants

What's surprising is not the sympathetic coverage, it's the complete lack of facts for such a story. But before you realize that, you have to read 19 paragraphs of how the immigrants (we're speaking primarily of illegal immigrants here, but the AP would have none of that) are getting screwed by the very city they're only trying to help:

New Orleans prohibits people from asking for work on the street but enforcement was relaxed because the city recognized "the important contributions of these laborers," said Lisa Ponce de Leon, the city's director of international relations.

Deportations have increased 156 percent since 2005, when 3,962 immigrants were deported, to 9,749 deportations in 2007, according to ICE.

Five immigrants interviewed by The Associated Press said ICE agents often patrol streets posing as contractors — and then deport day laborers who hop in their trucks.

Even so, some rooting of new arrivals has taken place. Civic organizations, small businesses and blue-collar union organizing indicate the Latino presence has firmed.

U.S. Census data indicates nearly 100,000 Hispanics moved to the Gulf Coast after Katrina, but the Census tends not to reach undocumented immigrants.

So if deportations have increased, usually it's indicative of an increase in illegal immigration, which the story confirms, despite the headline, immigrants "leaving New Orleans." That's right, despite the numbers of immigration, they are emigrating because:

He's well on his way there at this rate:

College freshman John Tyler Hammons will soon trade in his seat in front of his video games for one in front of the Muskogee, Okla., city council when he's sworn in as mayor next week.

"Apart from this passion I have for government, I'm pretty normal," said 19-year-old Hammons, who told ABCNews.com that he's "excited" about his victory in the election Tuesday. "I'm probably super normal."

Hammons, who is majoring in political science at the University of Oklahoma until he transfers somewhere closer to Muskogee, won the election with 70 percent of the vote, according to the city's election board.

Actually, it's worse than that:

This is the 1980s equivalent of the government being given the legal authority to seize cassette recorders if they were used in recording a song off of the radio. Under this legislation, downloading even a single mp3 file unauthorized by the copyright owner will give the federal government the power to take your computer. There is no way that the federal government can enforce this. In fact, it is insane that the U.S. House of Representatives is more concerned about keeping the record and movie industry happy by passing this legislation than they are with real issues. Incredibly, this bill was passed by a vote of 410-11.

Cindy Sheehan files for Pelosi's seat

In the spirit of Democratic party fragmentation, GO CINDY!

Getting on the ballot will be the easy part for Sheehan. If she becomes a recognized candidate, she'll be challenging one of the best-known and most powerful Democrats in the country in Pelosi, a 10-term incumbent who routinely collects around 80 percent of the vote in the San Francisco-only district.

Election challenges are nothing new to Pelosi, who has faced token Republican opposition in most of her November races, along with occasional primary challenges. But since she beat former San Francisco Supervisor Harry Britt in the 1987 special election to replace the late Rep. Sala Burton, Pelosi's political resume has been short of opponents anyone other than local political junkies has ever heard of.
