From the BBC:
Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has confirmed he will call a referendum on his plan for statehood that implicitly recognises Israel's right to exist.President Abbas, in the face of Hamas and many other Islamic groups, has consistently pushed for a co-existence, and the recognition of Israel. This is the kind of Muslim we need to hear from and see more often.
... The move was announced as efforts to persuade the Hamas government to accept the idea of a Palestinian state co-existing with Israel failed. Hamas does not recognise Israel, and has already said any referendum would be illegal.
Yet, with Hamas in the driver's seat of Palestinian politics, Abbas has a hard road ahead of him, to put it lightly. And Israeli Prime Minister Olmert, is just the guy the Middle East needs.
I only see Hamas standing in the way of the closest chance for peace the Middle East has ever seen in decades.
