I am not one of those paranoid guys that is completely anti-governement. In fact, I supported the Patriot Act, and still do -for at least another few years. But even I, a firm believer in the priority of national security have to draw the line.
"On Sept. 28, key rights guaranteed by our Constitution, plus the central tenet of the Magna Carta, were nullified by an act of Congress..."Michael Ventura raises some striking parallels with his editorial:
The Fourth Amendment guarantees a "speedy and public trial." But a commission judge "may close to the public all or part of the proceedings" for reasons of national security, which he alone gets to decide...There's much more, read it.
The bill states elsewhere that torture is prohibited but supplies a loophole: The judge has power to decide otherwise and admit a self-incriminating statement spoken under "coercion"; "evidence shall be admissible if the military judge determines that the evidence would have probative value to a reasonable person"...
Evidence, so-called, can be introduced without citing sources or proving the integrity of its evidentiary trail. The judge determines what constitutes "a sufficient basis."...
This isn't just about terrorists. This includes Citizens, and the ability to subject any person through it after he is classified as an unlawful enemy-combatant, for numerous (and non-terror) reasons.
I'm confident President Bush has good intentions and as far as he can control, would not purposefully abuse this power. But what about those beyond his reach and oversight, including future administrations, future Judges, future prosecutors, future law enforcement. Once the lower level machinery of the government becomes accustomed to this nullification, who is to stop the malevolent use of it? It's outrageous. No, it's more than outrageous, it's tyranny in embryo. It must be crushed.

Man you Yanks can realy bitch about nothing. You live a safe fat easy life and still think you are being hard done by. Stop moaning and enjoy what you have, or come to africa and see how some of the worlds others do have something to wory about.
The way Americans live is way off the graph compaired to most of the people I see each day, and I live in the nice part of Africa.
WAKE UP. Enjoy your easy life and stop wasting your time on crap like this Blog.
Am I supposed to be sorry or feel guilty because I have it easier than starving, oppressed Africans? Why do you think I fly the flag every place I can on my blog? It's becuase I know this is the greatest country there is. And freedom is what I blog about. You could say the same thing you said to me to any other blogger whatever they write about. I am sorry for your jealous rage, but what I blog for is the same thing the subjects of corrupt tyrants should be fighting for. I have such an "easy" life because I am blessed by those who fought and died for me and my freedom. When that is threatened, you're damned right I'm gonna bitch about it.
Phil, standing up for our freedoms is what Americans do. Standing up for the freedoms of oppressed peoples is also something we have on occasion done.
Our constitution has given us the freedom and the liberty to achieve all we desire. Do we want America to become an African country? No! We will fight for our freedoms and our liberty. We will fight for the potential of achieving the American Dream. Blogs such as Stan's keep us informed and build community.
Maybe if you would "waste" some time in a similar fashion, you could help improve the lot in your neighborhood.
Phil,
Perhaps you should do a little worrying about your freedoms. Seems obvious to me why we have a such a good life. We keep an eye on those that want to take it away.
