Really. There's a bunch of oil, apparently, in Burma. And strangely enough, the evil oil-thirsty-hegemon America is not occupying that country. Odd.
Though I'm sure if we do, it'll be because of the oil, and certainly not because of blatant human rights violations by a brutal military dictatorship.
Then again, we could just send in Rambo.
On a more serious note, for those who recently started paying attention to this developing story, the reports you've been hearing about the crackdown just scratch the surface. You may recall, actor Jim Carey brought attention to Burma a month ago with this video. Even his plea for help came after decades of brutality and oppression.
Only ineffective NGOs and a handful of celebrities have been trying to help, the UN is characteristically absent, and if we're to obey some form of international law via the UN Security Council, let alone world opinion, American military intervention will be a non-option.
Burma will suffer, facilitated by the hands of an unwilling an apathetic West. The same West that champions human rights and democracy, and pledged "never again."
Is it our place to intervene on behalf of the people suffering in Burma? Maybe. We took on the role of world police, we took on the role of global human rights leader, and justified deposing Saddam for humanitarian goals. Why should we be any different when we don't feel like it?
