Heh. Selectively, that is:
McCain’s green pitch left out that Washington’s so-called CAFE law will cost the industry $85 billion in the next decade, and will add thousands of dollars to the cost of every new car ($1500 by estimate of the leftist Union of Concerned Scientists; $5000 by industry estimates). This is just another version of the nanny-state, except it's aimed at big business; taking away freedoms for our own protection, at a hefty cost. I'm not surprised it's coming from John the 'Maverick'.
Big government types from McCain Republicans to Obama Democrats are placing unnecessary and near impossible expectations on our automakers. First of all, when Americans start making the 35+ mpg car market a profit, the automakers will be more than happy to supply them such cars. But when the government forces it upon them, we get more expensive cars that cannot stand up to impacts over 5 mph, cars with eye appeal comparable to Rosie O'Donnell, complete with the horsepower and torque of a lawnmower.
It might help people feel better about the environment, but it won't make an ounce of difference. It will most likely however, run the American auto-industry into the ground.
