We'll go to war for human rights, but we won't not go to the Olympics for them...
China's crackdown in Tibet will not cause President Bush to cancel his planned trip to the Beijing Olympics, the White House said Thursday.Yeah it's just Tibet... But if this were happening over Taiwan, we'd be singing a different tune. Unfortunately, I think even that hypothetical will change in the next presidency. It's seems to be increasingly the case, according to the behavior of leading businesses and politicians, that what is good for China is good for America.
At the same time, the administration interceded on behalf of Tibetan protesters and requested a firsthand look at how Chinese police were dealing with them.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice spoke to Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi Wednesday night for about 20 minutes, urging restraint and also Chinese talks with the Dalai Lama, the Tibetans' spiritual leader.
