Admittedly, I enjoy the Democrats engaging in circus acts to cover their ass, often to the point of doing more damage to themselves than had the metaphoric shit hit the fan anyway.
But I agree with Reid; any appointment by Blagojevich would be and should be opposed. I don't think race has anything to do with it, rather the little institutional integrity the Senate has left ought to be protected regardless of its racial make-up. It shouldn't be another victim of Chicago politics.

Unfortunately, while Blagowhatthefuck is undoubtedly a scumbag criminal, and should be punished to the fullest extent of the law, he has not been impeached yet, and is still the seated governor of the state that elected him (for whatever idiotic reason).
All that said, there is no legal standing to deny his Senatorial appointment his seat. It surely makes the Democrats out to be entertaining morons that they are trying (and stumbling all over themselves in the process), but until the citizens or courts call Blago on the carpet... he is still the governor, with all the powers and capacities thereof.
Reid does have constitutional options to remove Burris if seated, although I think it would have to come to a vote. You're right about Blago, and I'm not sure of Reid's current legal footing in attempting to block him. The whole thing is ugly, but at least it's procedurally interesting making history this way.
