With the UN resolution calling for a cease-fire to begin tomorrow at 1:oo am eastern time, Israel will have the deck stacked against them.
Here we have the preconditions to a lasting cease-fire, from the NYT:
The leader of Hezbollah, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, has said his militant group will continue to fight Israeli troops so long as they are on the soil of Lebanon. Israel is committed to stopping all offensive military actions, but will respond to attacks. Israel has also said that its troops will continue to destroy Hezbollah assets and stockpiles in the areas that Israel controls until they are handed over to the Lebanese Army and the United Nations troops. And here we have the means to ensure a lasting cease-fire:
There is no clear timetable for when an expanded United Nations peacekeeping force, known as Unifil, will be ready to deploy, or even any agreement over which country will lead it. Israeli troops are expected to pull back gradually...
...a Lebanese cabinet meeting scheduled today to discuss the implementation of the United Nations resolution, including the disarmament of Hezbollah and the deployment of the Lebanese Army southward, was postponed indefinitely...
Of course this competent UN plan wouldn't work without the highly skilled and capable Lebanese Army which would control and aid in the disarmament of Iran Syria Hezbollah, as they have time and again before.
And naturally, the cooperation of Hezbollah would seal the deal; there is hope. I mean, if you were Hezbollah, you would want to lay down your guns, wouldn't you?
