Maybe Obama should think about distancing himself from Chicago

Rezko, Wright, Ayers, and now Pfleger. Who's next, and how long can he keep "distancing" from his idiot supporters?

Obama said he was "deeply disappointed" by Pfleger's comments.

"As I have traveled this country, I've been impressed not by what divides us, but by all that that unites us," he said in a statement. "That is why I am deeply disappointed in Father Pfleger's divisive, backward-looking rhetoric, which doesn't reflect the country I see or the desire of people across America to come together in common cause."

I guess it's a good thing for Obama that most of America isn't judging him by the friends he keeps.

During an address at an anti-gun rally in front of Chuck's, Rev. Michael Pfleger, pastor of St. Sabina's Church, exhorted the crowd to "drag" shop owner, John Riggio, from his shop "like a rat" and "snuff" him. Rev. Pfleger went on to tell the crowd that legislators that vote against gun control legislation should be "snuffed" as well. As many know, "snuff" is slang for especially violent murder.

And then there's the money, $225,000 in grants to Pfleger's programs received after donating to Obama.

Update: this is the second time the Archdiocese of Chicago has condemned statements from Pfleger. The first involved the death threat quoted above. Google it.

Texas Supreme Court returns FLDS kids

Good.

The Texas Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that children who were separated from their parents following a raid on a polygamist ranch should be returned.

The ruling effectively ends one of the largest child custody cases in U.S. history.

I've commented on this before, and it's good to see the state's overly aggressive CPS agency be put to shame.

[I]n its ruling on Thursday, the Texas Supreme Court said that child welfare officials overstepped their authority by pulling the children from their homes and that the kids should be returned.

"There has been a catastrophic, emotional and physical trauma to these families," said FLDS member Will Jessop. "Permanent damage that will be left on them for a lifetime."

"Two wrongs do not make a right," Jessop added. "This is truly a nightmare that we have waken up to, and hopefully have it end."

The justices based their ruling on an appellate court's finding last week that no evidence has yet been presented showing that the children really were being abused -- physically or sexually.

Excuse me, Mr. Huckabee...

Republicans need to be Republicans. The greatest threat to classic Republicanism is not liberalism; it's this new brand of libertarianism, which is social liberalism and economic conservatism, but it's a heartless, callous, soulless type of economic conservatism because it says "look, we want to cut taxes and eliminate government. If it means that elderly people don't get their Medicare drugs, so be it. If it means little kids go without education and healthcare, so be it."

I thought small government was the core of Republican, nay, classic Republican principles. I guess as long as Uncle Sam doesn't lay a finger on our wallets, he's more than welcome to tell us what we can and can't do in our own bedrooms.

Oh, and last I checked, free markets made the poorest in this country vastly richer than the poor in most centralized market economies.

PSH, eh? Gun Ranges and Target Shooting "result in people being shot and killed"

Yes folks, just like how Driver's Education leads to more tragic car accidents.

"Nobody can deny [it]"

Mayor David Miller wants to close recreational shooting ranges in Toronto, along with giving the city power to block gun manufacturers and wholesalers from opening new plants or warehouses.

"Nobody can deny that hobby directly results in people being shot and killed on the streets of our city," Miller said of sport shooting yesterday, amid debate on a possible gun bylaw.

Canadian Olympic pistol shooter and downtown resident Avianna Chao begs to differ. She says that if Miller gets his way, it could mean an end to her sport – and it won't make the streets one bit safer.

Miller wants to terminate leases with two gun clubs that have shooting ranges on city property, one at Union Station, the other at Don Montgomery community centre.

Chao, who will head to Beijing this summer to compete for Canada at the Olympics, began shooting at Don Montgomery and now trains primarily at the Union range.

It seems Canada's strict gun control laws are failing, so naturally they want to try more of the same thing, only harder:

They asked for a three-point plan to limit gun violence by:

• Making sure federal firearms marking regulations are stringently followed so guns can be traced.
• Appointing federal prosecutors to Ontario's guns and gangs task force.
• Closing legal loopholes that let gun parts be brought into Canada.

At the same time, city staff released a report calling for a bylaw that would allow the city to restrict or prohibit the making and wholesaling of firearms in Toronto.

Only police and the military should be allowed to operate firing ranges, the report says, calling for an end to the gun club leases.

Recommendations would apply to all firearms, including rifles and shotguns. But in a scrum with reporters, Miller directed most of his comments toward handguns.

Of course, questions arise, like why target the law-abiding for a criminal problem?

"It doesn't make any sense to be zeroing in on a gun club," he said. "We're an Olympic sport ... I'm not sure how shutting us down would help to cut the gun crime."

Sorry pal, it's only about appearing like they're doing their job. They're failing at reducing crime, so they compensate by looking like they're working harder, lest they be thrown out of office. It's more about justifying their paychecks in the face of consistent and utter failure.

It's about feeling safe, as Kaveman said, which "is like being safe, only different."

The UN's peacekeeping apparently involves child rape

From CNN:

Children as young as 6 have been forced to have sex with aid workers and peacekeepers in return for food and money, Save the Children UK said in a report released Tuesday.

After interviewing hundreds of children, the charity said it found instances of rape, child prostitution, pornography, indecent sexual assault and trafficking of children for sex.

"It is hard to imagine a more grotesque abuse of authority or flagrant violation of children's rights," said Jasmine Whitbread, chief executive of Save the Children UK.

In the report, "No One To Turn To" a 15-year-old girl from Haiti told researchers: "My friends and I were walking by the National Palace one evening when we encountered a couple of humanitarian men. The men called us over and showed us their penises.

"They offered us 100 Haitian gourdes ($2.80) and some chocolate if we would suck them. I said, 'No,' but some of the girls did it and got the money."

Save the Children says that almost as shocking as the abuse itself is the "chronic under-reporting" of the abuses. It believes that thousands more children around the world could be suffering in silence.

If you read the whole thing you'll find mention of an investigation that started last year, where a handful were jailed, and a few others faced the gallows, er, I mean they were dismissed or repatriated. Talk about effective deterrence.

Woman found guilty of leaving baby in garbage, gets probation

There are a lot of unanswered questions, which, on their face point to nothing less than criminal negligence, if not out-right murder.

The woman who brought her child to term, gave birth and placed it in a garbage dumpster where it was found dead. Allahpundit asks the obvious but important questions linked above; If she didn't want the baby, why not abort it? And if it was stillborn, why dispose of it that way?

Under a plea agreement, she will be sentenced June 27 to time already served - about 30 days of jail time and about 695 days of electronic monitoring. She also will be placed on five years' probation, said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

Judge Kathleen Kennedy warned Ashcraft she could face up to 10 years in prison if she violates probation.

It was "a fair ending to a tragic situation," said her attorney, Mark Geragos.

A fair ending? Fair perhaps if she was extremely mentally handicap and couldn't tell right from wrong. I don't know what kind of educational standards they have at USC, but I don't think a person could make it to their third year without having the capacity to at least seek help for a newborn or stillborn, which would be the only situation making this sentence even close to being fair.

Hopefully such behavior will change.

If this shakeup turns out to be true, and better yet, yields positive results well, it means this is another example of the way bureaucracies work in democracies -- which is to say that although they are slow and resistant to change, change and accountability are inevitable.

It's too early to tell how much positive change will become of this, but such examples are merely few of the many characteristics that set even the most heinous of American bureaucracies apart from our real enemies, despite what many on the fringe tend to think.

A teenager is facing prosecution for using the word "cult" to describe the Church of Scientology.

The unnamed 15-year-old was served the summons by City of London police when he took part in a peaceful demonstration opposite the London headquarters of the controversial religion.

Officers confiscated a placard with the word "cult" on it from the youth, who is under 18, and a case file has been sent to the Crown Prosecution Service.

A date has not yet been set for him to appear in court.

The decision to issue the summons has angered human rights activists and support groups for the victims of cults.

The incident happened during a protest against the Church of Scientology on May 10. Demonstrators from the anti-Scientology group, Anonymous, who were outside the church's £23m headquarters near St Paul's cathedral, were banned by police from describing Scientology as a cult by police because it was "abusive and insulting."

McCain's new scandal

Most of the "scandals" involving McCain heretofore have been weak, almost as weak as oh, Steven Segal's acting. But this one may just pick up some traction in the mainstream media:

McCain, who has made fighting special-interest projects a centerpiece of his presidential campaign, inserted $14.3 million in a 2003 defense bill to buy land around Luke Air Force Base in a provision sought by SunCor Development, the largest of about 50 landowners near the base. SunCor representatives, upset with a state law that restricted development around Luke, met with McCain's staff to lobby for funding, according to John Ogden, SunCor's president at the time.

The Air Force later paid SunCor $3 million for 122 acres near the base. It was the highest single land transaction of the private lots purchased by the government — three times the county's assessed value and twice the military's estimated value. SunCor also donated another 122 acres. Alan Bunnell, a spokesman for SunCor's parent company, Pinnacle West Capital, said the donation was meant to minimize the company's tax bill and enhance the value of adjacent property it owns.

McCain has long-standing ties to SunCor and Pinnacle West:

• McCain's campaigns have received $224,000 since 1998 from donors connected to Pinnacle West, including $104,100 for his current presidential run, according to a USA TODAY analysis of campaign-finance data compiled by the non-partisan CQ MoneyLine.

I don't think this is really a big deal, and if it is, it probably has less to do with McCain and more to do with the suits securing the land deals. But what do I care, I'm don't even like McCain.

Will I hold my nose and pull the lever for him? Once I figure out who the lesser evil is, I'll let you know. Until then, I'm supporting John McClane.

Get this, the Burma military junta just won an election, overwhelmingly:

Myanmar announced Thursday that a constitution won massive support in a referendum — a claim slammed by a leading rights group as an insult to the country's people.

The document, which critics say will cement nearly four decades of military rule, was approved by 92.4 percent of the 22 million eligible voters last Saturday.

In Burma (or Myanmar as the junta prefers), the people place civic duty above other pesky priorities, like finding food, clean water, shelter, and gathering and burying their dead after a devastating cyclone. They also apparently find the junta's handling of the devastation top-notch.

Wow: AP sob-story on Katrina Immigrants

What's surprising is not the sympathetic coverage, it's the complete lack of facts for such a story. But before you realize that, you have to read 19 paragraphs of how the immigrants (we're speaking primarily of illegal immigrants here, but the AP would have none of that) are getting screwed by the very city they're only trying to help:

New Orleans prohibits people from asking for work on the street but enforcement was relaxed because the city recognized "the important contributions of these laborers," said Lisa Ponce de Leon, the city's director of international relations.

Deportations have increased 156 percent since 2005, when 3,962 immigrants were deported, to 9,749 deportations in 2007, according to ICE.

Five immigrants interviewed by The Associated Press said ICE agents often patrol streets posing as contractors — and then deport day laborers who hop in their trucks.

Even so, some rooting of new arrivals has taken place. Civic organizations, small businesses and blue-collar union organizing indicate the Latino presence has firmed.

U.S. Census data indicates nearly 100,000 Hispanics moved to the Gulf Coast after Katrina, but the Census tends not to reach undocumented immigrants.

So if deportations have increased, usually it's indicative of an increase in illegal immigration, which the story confirms, despite the headline, immigrants "leaving New Orleans." That's right, despite the numbers of immigration, they are emigrating because:

The number of workers who have left is uncertain.

College freshman John Tyler Hammons will soon trade in his seat in front of his video games for one in front of the Muskogee, Okla., city council when he's sworn in as mayor next week.

"Apart from this passion I have for government, I'm pretty normal," said 19-year-old Hammons, who told ABCNews.com that he's "excited" about his victory in the election Tuesday. "I'm probably super normal."

Hammons, who is majoring in political science at the University of Oklahoma until he transfers somewhere closer to Muskogee, won the election with 70 percent of the vote, according to the city's election board.

This is the 1980s equivalent of the government being given the legal authority to seize cassette recorders if they were used in recording a song off of the radio. Under this legislation, downloading even a single mp3 file unauthorized by the copyright owner will give the federal government the power to take your computer. There is no way that the federal government can enforce this. In fact, it is insane that the U.S. House of Representatives is more concerned about keeping the record and movie industry happy by passing this legislation than they are with real issues. Incredibly, this bill was passed by a vote of 410-11.
